An allergy is the over reaction of the body to a foreign protein taking the form of asthma, hay fever, urticaria, eczema, migraine and irritable bowel. Substances that the body reacts to are called allergens and against these, the body produces antibodies and the release of various chemicals such as histamine which causes irritation and swelling of mucous membranes.
Skin allergies occur when your skin reacts abnormally to a substance that it comes into contact with. This may result in a skin eruption that is itchy and/or painful (see Hives). Chamomile complex cream has had great success with those suffering with a contact dermatitis. Chamomile can be as effective as 0.25% steroid cream, yet without the skin thinning effect. In addition, its constituents such as chamazulene have been found to reduce inflammation through inhibition of histamne release. Other components appear to exert anti-bacerial and anti-fungal activity (although with any new cream - a 24 hour test patch should be carried out).
If the lining of your nose over-reacts to a substance that is inhaled, for example dust or pollen, then your nose produces excess mucous and causes nasal congestion or a runny nose, this kind of reaction is also known as hayfever. The irritation in your nasal passages may also cause sneezing buy clopidogrel .
When your intestines react to a substance that you have eaten the reaction may result in diarrhoea, skin rashes or even anaphylactic shock. Milder reactions by the intestines are commonly referred to as food allergies and substance such as milk and dairy are common allergens. L-glutamine powder may be useful in helping leaky gut syndrome, that is often common with those with many food allergies.
The aim of the herbalist is to naturally lower histamine levels - a food intolerance test is highly recommended. The protein in cows milk has been showed to raise histamine levels. For hayfever we would recommend Eyebright and Nettle complex as a tincture, Kelp and Spirulina capsules to aid detoxification of the body, Vitamin C and bioflavonoids and chamomile tea whose steam can be inhaled to soothe the inflamed membranes.
If you are experiencing allergic type symptoms, e.g. sneezing, runny nose, coughing, diarrhoea, itching or hives for longer than a week then please consult your healthcare practitioner.
